I was recently in a meeting with my Sunday School teachers and we discussed what it meant to disciple our students. We decided that having them in a Sunday School small group bible study was good, but it was the minimum. We realized that Sunday School small group bible study was not going to disciple our students. If we were going to get serious about our students becoming like Jesus Christ then we had to get serious about making sure we did everything we could to give our students the chance to grow in their walk with Jesus. I went around the room and I asked if each one would be able to sit down with a student from their class, one-on-one, and disciple them. Each one agreed that was the exact thing they needed to do, but each one also struggled with finding the time. But I think there's more to it.
The biggest problem with discipling someone is that most of us were not discipled as young believers and, while we all have things we know we would want to teach a new or young believer, we just don't feel comfortable stepping out and actually doing it. But let's be honest, any attempt you make to help a student grow in their walk with Jesus is better than no attempt at all. For years, I have wanted to find a guide that would help in discipling someone. I have looked at several things but each one seemed to be lacking in some way.
